  2. Don't Take Anything Personally
  3. Don't Make Assumptions
  4. Always Do Your Best

The Four Agreements quotes that we’re about to share with you will help you find personal freedom, freeing you from the limitations in life that you might be feeling now. Let’s get started!

Be Impeccable With Your Word

For many people, this is the hardest principle to follow. When Don Miguel Ruiz says, “Be impeccable with your word,” what he means is that you should only say what you truly mean. Think before you speak, and only say what genuinely rings true to you.

Here are The Four Agreements quotes that go along with this principle:

  • “Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”
  • “Go inside and listen to your body, because your body will never lie to you. Your mind will play tricks, but the way you feel in your heart, in your guts, is the truth.”
  • “Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama.”
  • “Find yourself and express yourself in your own particular way. Express your love openly. Life is nothing but a dream, and if you create your life with love, your dream becomes a masterpiece of art.”

Don't Take Anything Personally

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. The second principle Don Miguel Ruiz touches on is “Don’t take anything personally.” Now, this is certainly easier said than done and will require some practice. As humans, we tend to believe that everything is about us, which leads us to take things personally. However, you have to remember: the world doesn’t revolve around you. Someone’s words may be the result of them projecting their own beliefs of themselves onto you, or maybe they’re being snippy because they had a bad day. Avoiding taking things personally can help you achieve personal freedom.

Here are The Four Agreements quotes that will help you practice this principle:

  • “Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.”
  • “There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally.”
  • “Taking things personally makes you easy prey for these predators, the black magicians. They can hook you easily with one little opinion and feed you whatever poison they want, and because you take it personally, you eat it up. You eat all their emotional garbage, and now it becomes your garbage. But if you do not take it personally, you are immune in the middle of hell. Immunity to poison in the middle of hell is the gift of this agreement.”

Don't Make Assumptions

Making assumptions will not help you. You are not a mind reader, and you never know what someone else is truly thinking. Practicing the principle of “don’t make assumptions” will definitely take some practice if you’re prone to making assumptions often. Don Miguel Ruiz believes that making assumptions can lead to suffering, so it’s better to avoid making assumptions.

Here are The Four Agreements quotes that will help you process this principle:

  • “It is always better to ask questions than to make an assumption, because assumptions set us up for suffering.”
  • “Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.”
  • “Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.”
  • “If others tell us something we make assumptions, and if they don't tell us something we make assumptions to fulfill our need to know and to replace the need to communicate. Even if we hear something and we don't understand we make assumptions about what it means and then believe the assumptions. We make all sorts of assumptions because we don't have the courage to ask questions.”

Always Do Your Best

This principle is one that your parents and teachers have likely driven into your mind since you were a little kid. If you aren’t practicing “always do your best” then you are not living life to the best of your ability. You may be missing out on opportunities and stunting your personal growth. Ultimately, if you do not always do your best, you are ultimately hurting yourself in the long run.

Here are The Four Agreements quotes that will help you do your best:

  • “When you don’t do your best, you are denying yourself the right to be you.”
  • “Just do your best — in any circumstance in your life. It doesn’t matter if you are sick or tired, if you always do your best there is no way you can judge yourself. And if you don’t judge yourself there is no way you are going to suffer from guilt, blame, and self-punishment. By always doing your best, you will break a big spell that you have been under.”
  • “Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.”
