4 Tips to Elevate Your Life with Better Sleep Hygiene

Are you looking to elevate your life? As you move on with your personal journey and growth hacking, you may be overlooking something simple but very, very important: your sleep hygiene. We know you’ve been hearing it ever since you were a little kid, but it’s true: sleep is really important for your overall well being. Getting a good night’s sleep consistently is crucial for your mental health and physical health. You can’t have a balanced body without good sleep.

Sleep hygiene refers to how healthy your bedtime routine and sleep schedule are. Better sleep hygiene will lead to a better night’s sleep and greater wellbeing, which in turn will elevate your life.

Here are four sleep hygiene tips we’ve put together for you.

1. Create the Perfect Sleep Schedule

Having a sleep schedule is one of the best sleep hygiene tips we have for you. Of course, this is easier said than done, and it may take some time for you to adjust to a sleep schedule. It will be worth the time and effort, though. Going to sleep at around the same time every night and waking up at around the same time every morning will help you elevate your life by having more energy and greater focus. If your sleep schedule is all over the place and you’re feeling constantly tired and unfocused, this is likely why. Make small steps every day towards getting your bedtime and wake time to be the same. For example, if you’re looking to move your bedtime to 10:30PM but you currently go to sleep anywhere from 11 to 12, move your bedtime closer to 15 minutes every night until you reach your goal time. Focus on getting 7 or more hours of sleep rather than focusing on going to sleep super early. Creating a healthy sleep schedule is a building block to build healthy habits in other aspects of your life, and of course, this will help to elevate your life.

2. Nightly Routine for Sleep Hygiene

Do you have trouble winding down every night? Well, we don’t blame you. We live in a stressful world, and it can be really difficult to relax at the end of a long, stressful day. Having a calming nightly routine can help you build healthy habits and is another one of our top sleep hygiene tips. Nightly routines can be highly individualized, but here are some ideas that you can incorporate into yours:

  • Meditating
  • Doing some gentle stretching
  • Having a cup of noncaffeinated tea
  • Journaling
  • Lighting candles or using a diffuser with relaxing scents
  • Using a pillow spray with relaxing scents
  • Turning off all bright lights by a certain time
  • Unplugging from phones and computers
  • Reading a good book
  • Using blue light blocking glasses
  • Listening to calming music
  • Keep the room at a cool temperature
  • Limit caffeine intake in the afternoon and evening (preferably no caffeine after 2 PM)

Trust yourself as you experiment with nightly routines and figure out what works best for you to develop a balanced body and a balanced mind at nighttime.

3. Elevate Your Bedroom, Elevate Your Life

Is your bedroom conducive to relaxation? If not, this one of the sleep hygiene tips is for you. If your room is super cluttered or too bright, for example, this might make it difficult for you to unwind and sleep. Stay focused on relaxing by making sure your room is neat (or at least mostly neat) and has the right tools to help you get sleepy. Here are some changes you can make to your bedroom aside from tidying up:

  • Investing in high-quality comfortable bedding
  • Buying some relaxing scented candles or an essential oil diffuser
  • Buying a pillow spray
  • Making sure lights aren’t bright after a certain hour
  • Keeping your computer away from your bed
  • Using blackout curtains to get a really dark sleeping environment
  • Using a sleep mask

Just like with the nightly routines, what works best for you will be individualized. Experiment to discover what gives you a balanced body and a balanced mind.

4. Build and Practice Healthy Sleep Hygiene Habits

One of our last sleep hygiene tips is to simply practice the above tips. When you build healthy habits, you must be consistent and repetitive to turn them into habits that will eventually become second nature to you.

So, for example, don’t just do a relaxing nightly routine once a month. Incorporate your nightly routine nightly, just as the name suggests. It takes time to build healthy habits, so be sure to be patient with yourself as you go through the process. These sleep hygiene tips aren’t necessarily easy, but they’re worth it. Trust us!

Why Sleep Hygiene Will Elevate Your Life

When you are tired, your creativity suffers. You are less personable, and your productivity crashes. This will hold you back from being the best version of yourself, and we don’t want that, right? Being tired will restrict you from being the best you can be whether it’s in work, play, or personal relationships. Being well rested will allow you to succeed in these areas and elevate your life, so be sure to follow these sleep hygiene tips!
