5 Steps to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

Have you been feeling down, stuck, and overall in a funk? Once you’re in that low, dark place, it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and you may have no idea of how to get out of a funk. Well, that’s what we’re here to help you with.

As humans, we can’t be happy all of the time, and it’s natural and normal for us to go through periods of lows. People who struggle with depression are more likely to fall into these funks, but even if you don’t struggle with depression, it’s still important to raise depression awareness. Plus, as you may know from firsthand experience, it’s totally possible to fall into a funk without having full-blown depression.

In order to get out of a funk, you need to reset yourself inside and out. Here are five steps for how to get out of a funk and gain unbreakable confidence along the way.

Gratitude - Step 1 to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

Wondering how to get out of a depression funk? First things first, you need to snap out of comparison mode. It’s there to steal your joy. When you compare yourself to others, you’re setting yourself up for trouble. Your journey is yours, and yours alone. You can gain a healthier perspective on your life by engaging in gratitude practices. This can help you leave behind the pressures of comparison once and for all. Cultivate a relationship with gratitude so you can be happy now, not later. Gratitude is key for how to get out of a funk.

Whether you’re making a mental list, writing in your journal, or using The Daily Shifts app, name at least three things that you’re grateful for daily. It can include a person, place, thing, experience...you name it. This will get you focusing on what you do have rather than what you don’t have. You can even focus on yourself with your gratitude practice, and write down qualities that you have that you’re grateful for. This can help you build unbreakable confidence, along with other practices, like using confidence affirmations.

Breathing - Step 2 to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

Breathing is a valuable tool for how to get out of a funk. It’s a simple, great, and free way to pull yourself out of a funk, especially if anxiety and stress are contributing to it. You can experiment with different types of breathing exercises and determine which works best for you. For example, you might like something intense like the Wim Hof breathing method, or something a little more relaxed like slow mindful inhales in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Practicing breathing exercises can help you:

  • Relieve stress and anxiety
  • Connect your intentions to your breath
  • Align brain function and produce a heightened awareness
  • Learn to stay more present

Mindfulness - Step 3 to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

The breath is a key component of mindfulness, but there’s more to it than that. Mindfulness is another great tool for how to get out of a funk. It’s all about bringing presence to your life so you can experience your life to the fullest. You can experience life to the fullest by accepting each moment as it is. With mindfulness, you should observe what is happening in the current moment without judgement. Just notice it as it is. Change your perception of what happens “to you” to what is happening “for your best interest.” When you notice how you feel, avoid labeling your emotions as good or bad. Just let them be.

You can practice mindfulness in literally every aspect of your life – whether it’s breathing, eating, or being in relationships. Be fully present at every moment, and your mental health will reap the benefits.

Health - Step 4 to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

One of the most crucial steps for how to get out of a funk is to go back and focus on the basics when it comes to health: including diet, exercise, and sleep. Sometimes when we’re in a funk, we don’t realize it, but we’ve been neglecting our physical health. Our physical health and mental health are very interconnected, and if our physical health isn’t being taken care of, it’s likely that mental health may be slipping, too. It’s time to realign your health and show up feeling your best.

So, how do you fix this? Well, we recommend picking up two simple habits that’ll improve your health instantly. For example, you may decide that you’ll get a big water bottle to make sure you drink enough water every day, or maybe you’ll decide to keep your phone out of your room at bedtime so you can fall asleep earlier and easier. Healthy habits will help you re-energize and overcome brain fog. This will also help you gain unbreakable confidence because when we feel good physically, we are more likely to feel confident. Feeling lousy physically lends itself to our confidence being low.

Connection - Step 5 to Get Out of a Funk & Gain Unbreakable Confidence

Oftentimes when we’re in a funk, we find ourselves isolating and withdrawing from our loved ones. However, this will only make your funk worse, allowing you to mope around and stay in the negative zone. Instead, aim to nurture your highest self — you deserve the highest quality of life. Avoid a fixed mindset by prioritizing meaningful connections in all areas of life. Develop a true connection with yourself by tuning into your physical and emotional needs.

Listen to your intuition. What kind of connection are you craving? A family connection? A romantic connection? Whatever it is, lean into it. You may find it very helpful to open up to these people and let them know that you’re struggling with a funk. They might have their own tips for how to get out of depression funk. Human connection is key when we’re feeling down, even when you really feel like you just want to close yourself off. Plus, fostering strong relationships with others — whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues — will help you build unbreakable confidence in your ability to connect with others.
